By nature I’m a self-starter. If I can’t find a community I want to be a part of, I create it. Last year, four writer-moms (including me) saw that we wanted a special space for us, so we created it with Scribente Maternum.

Having come across “Metaphors We Live By”—a text I read in college that changed the way I saw the world—I reflect on the meaning of how we might change the way we see the world by changing the metaphors we use.

This week I celebrated a milestone birthday. It’s been an incredible opportunity to reflect on the previous decade, the present moment, and make goals for the future. I believe celebrating milestones for a business or organization can have the same effect as the process has on an individual celebrating a birthday.

When I drafted Doerr&Co.’s value statement, I was reminded be a fellow business owner that “balance” should be a part of that. I’m at a point where I need to hold myself accountable to the value of balance.

Last March 2020, I was on the road to find more career consistency after a four-year move-and-kid-induced career detour. My goal was to find a rewarding, steady, and full-time salaried position. Then, of course, the pandemic hit.
