Bébé Voyage
Bébé Voyage is a leading travel blog and community resource for families with young kids who travel. The mission of the organization is to empower parents to raise children to be curious, open-minded and global citizens. They encourage parents to bring up lifelong explorers by exposing them to new cultures and experiences to build a better, more peaceful world for all. Bébé Voyage does this by building a community where travel-loving parents can share and support each other through their travel experiences, while promoting authentic, family-friendly experiences within the travel industry.
Challenge
While promoting global citizenship is an essential part of Bébé Voyage's work, there has been a gap in considering the colonial relationship and roots of privilege within the travel industry. Additionally, the organization's team is majority white and needed to think more strategically about looking how the organization could better reflect the demographics of the community they aim to represent—where the global majority of people are non-white. A major challenge BBV faced is the budgetary limits and the volunteer staff making it potentially inappropriate to invite people of color onto a team that didn't compensate.
Solution
Doerr & Co. worked with all areas of the organization—business operations, community managers, and editorial—to assess the various aspects that needed to be addressed. She created achievable and appropriate benchmarks that could be achieved and then drafted—with input and feedback from BBV team members—an Anti-Racism commitment statement that made public the benchmarks that the organization would then hold themselves accountable to. Furthering the accountability process, she created a tracking process to ensure each department area had a way to check in on their progress and create new benchmarks as the organization's anti-racism work evolved. While the first quarterly check-in highlighted some difficulties in achieving the desired results, by the second quarterly review, Bébé Voyage was on track and is set to achieve and perhaps even surpass its one year goal.
Deliverables
What we delivered
Assessment of all areas of the organization wherein anti-racism opportunities existed which included operational aspects of the organization, business model, and editorial content.
Drafted Bébé Voyage Anti-Racism Statement and provided recommendations on how to use it as a benchmark and integrated feedback from the various stakeholders to finalize the document.
Tracking process to ensure BBV team members continuously consider and keep with the benchmarks set for the organization.
“While our mission has always been about creating a more peaceful world for all by helping families with young children discover new places and interact with different people, we were blind to how our organizational structure was in contradiction to that mission. Elizabeth helped us see our shortcomings with such compassion and integrity that our whole team became enthused about creating and committing to an anti-racism statement.”
